- Fishing: Largemouth bass, catfish, crappie are commonplace here. Stripers, 30 pounders, are caught on our lake! Seine for shad and bait your hook. Up in the back coves, fisherman quietly troll for prized catches. Duke Energy's Wittenburg Access, on the main channel just West of Hwy 127 bridge, has tournaments in the evenings a couple days a week. Stop and ask for dates/times.
- Boating: Pontoons, the boat of choice, give us a feeling of slow and easy. Tie a transfer truck inner tube to the back, throw the kids on it and go. Pack lunches or stop at Rink Dam Marina (currently available for sale $999k) for a great hamburger and cold drink. Spend the entire day relaxing, soaking up the rays.
- Waterski or Seadoo: Preferred choice for college kids home for summer break. Watch out for ski bunnies in the fast lane!
We love our mountains! If warm turns to hot, head up Hwy 321 to Blowing Rock, Boone, and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
- Hiking: The 469 mile Blue Ridge parkway boasts over 100 miles of woodsy trails in NC with native Jack-in-the-pulpits, trillium, mayapple, bloodroot, crested iris, orchids, mosses, big leaf magnolias, bellwort, fiddleheads, rhododendron, azalea, mountain laurel to ponder while you adventure over creeks, around gigantic boulders, thru berry bushes, and under the canopy of ancient hardwoods and pines.
- Kayak/Canoe/Whitewater Rafting: French Broad, Nantahala, Watauga, Nolichucky, Wilson Creek offer different venues of water enjoyment, fast / slow, splash / float, scream / sing. The younger set will be happy mining for gems at one of the many mines. The 20 largest emeralds in North America were found in Hiddenite just 30 miles north of Hickory, NC.
We love shopping!
- You already know Hickory, NC is an hour's drive South of Blowing Rock and Boone but we are, also, an hour North of Charlotte and an hour West of Winston-Salem. These cities excel in shopping malls, outlets, fine and used stores.
- Foodstuffs: Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Earth Fare all serve up the freshest ingredients for your discriminating palate. We visit Winston's Whole Foods on our way west no matter if that is our final destination or not. It is pure enjoyment for our family. The aroma that fills the air is enough to sate your food passions. Fanciful breads, free trade coffee, organic veges, plentiful cheeses, free range meats, medicinal herbs, dried fruits and bulk flours, nuts, grains, etc excite your senses.
We love our cultural events!
- Art shows abound throughout the Hickory Metro all year round. Concerts, plays, galleries, pottery sales on the lawn. If you've heard of the face jug, you've heard of the Catawba Valley. Known as one of the Folk pottery centers of the US. My earlier blog posts display links to various artistic events. The city of Hickory will be at the SALT block this coming Saturday to celebrate Earth Day. Art in the Shop occurs twice a year and offers local artist's wares. This is a perfect place to get one-of-a-kind gifts for anyone on your shopping list.
We love the weather!
- Even if you hear us complain, it's only because we know how beautiful it can be under our "Carolina Blue" sky. Spring, summer, fall and winter each get 90 days to fill with splendor. Remember the movie Camelot? Hickory is kinda like that.........July and August cannot be too hot and there's a legal limit to the snow here! The winter is forbidden till December and exits March the second on the dot. By order, summer lingers through September In Hky! Hky! I know it sounds a bit bizarre, but in Hickory, that's how conditions are. The rain may never fall till after sundown. By eight, the morning fog must disappear. In short, there's simply not a more congenial spot than Hickory, NC! Well, it's kinda like that.
Consider visiting our fair city where you can enjoy the weather, the foliage, the shopping, the beach, the mountains and all wondrous places in between. Lake Hickory Realty, LLC will be happy to show you around! www.lakehickoryrealty.com
