Lake Rhodhiss

Let's take a look at Lake Rhodhiss and its waterfront communities; Harbor Ridge, Doe Run, Hays Mill Landing, Broadwater, Paradise Harbor and The Settings at Lake Rhodhiss.

Lake Rhodhiss, located on the county line between Caldwell and Burke, was created from the Catawba River in 1925. The hydroelectric dam is 65 ft high and 1500 ft long. Situated between lakes James and Hickory, Rhodhiss offers 90 miles of shoreline on just over 3000 acres. The high water mark is 995.1 feet above sea level and supplies needed water to the nearby cities of Morganton, Lenoir, Granite Falls and Valdese.

Much less developed than Lake Hickory,
Rhodhiss shows off its piney woods teeming with turkey, deer, eagles, herons, hawks, and kingfishers. The rolling hills offer homesteaders panoramic views of the deep water and mountains. The more familiar ranges include Flat Rock and Grandfather in the northwest and South Mtn in the southwest.

Lake Rhodhiss is most known for its fishing tournaments from Castle Bridge Access, one of five Duke Energy lake launches, occurring several times a week. Plenty of privacy yet close to highways and byways, shopping and medical, the quaint town of Rutherford College sits between the lake and the I-40 access. The Angler Channel states that "Electroshocks have shown that the lake has some of the biggest and best numbers of fish for the amount of acres than any lake in the Catawba chain. One biologist commented that there were more bait fish in a one-mile stretch of Rhodhiss than in most of Lake Norman."

Now, let's take a look at the neighborhoods on the north shore of Lake Rhodhiss . Doe Run in Caldwell county is currently the most developed and located about 2 miles from the town center of Granite Falls, NC (pop. 4800). Doe Run is made up of 3 sections or price ranges, something for every pocket book. The community offers lake access with a boat launch directly onto the main channel. Rolling hills throughout the subdivision gives many of the building sites wonderful views of the lake, Baker Mtn and the South Mountain range.

Broadwater Landing is a newer lake front community located within the city limits of Granite Falls and offers its residents city water, sewer and natural gas. One important note is that if you have the luxury of tapping into a city sewer on your waterfront lot, you are able to build about anywhere on the lot while still meeting lake and subdivision setbacks. If you have to dig a septic tank and field, which is most often the case, the home must be built according to the way the lot percs. I'll get into that later or drop me a line with any questions. Broadwater is elevated off the lake affording tremendous westerly views of the main channel, Grandfather Mountain and Table Rock. When the air is dry the panoramic vistas seem endless.

On the south side of the lake in Burke County, the communities of Paradise Harbor, Harbor Ridge and The Settings at Lake Rhodhiss can be found. Harbor Ridge was developed in the late 1990's and is located about 3 miles north of I-40 at exit 113. Subdivided into 136 lots of interior and waterfront lots, Harbor Ridge opened with properties ranging in size from just under an acre to almost 5 acres. The gated community offers lake access with day slips just off the main channel, fenced and secured dry boat storage and gated entrance. Castle Bridge lake access is just outside the community.

Paradise Harbor, a gated equestrian community, was subdivided into 2 sections with over 300 lots, interior and waterfront. Lot sizes range from just over an acre to more than 10 acres and each interior lots has its own boat slip.

The Settings at Lake Rhodhiss, encompassing 682 acres, is the newest community located on the westernmost side of the lake in Burke county. The Georgia developers will provide a multitude of amenities along with city water and sewer. This waterfront community is all about leisure on 4 miles of lake. It begins at the gated entry with a greeter's cottage. You'll delight in the lakeside clubhouse with day slips, swimming, tennis, fitness center with sauna, walking trails throughout with sidewalks and nature stations, as well as, an outdoor amphitheater.

All of these communities have Home Owners Associations with architectural review boards and underground utilities.
