Catawba Valley Destinations

The Catawba Valley has a wide assortment of "must-see" destinations besides the Catawba River System and the Hickory Furniture Mart. Let's take a look at a few....

Murray's Mill is open from spring to fall. It is comprised of the mill (1913), the general store (1890s), the Wheathouse (1880s), and the John Murray House furnished to the period (1913).

Bunker Hill Covered Bridge built in 1895, covered in 1900 and restored in 1994, is one of two remaining covered bridges in the whole state.

Hart Square opens to the public only one weekend a year and is on a first come-first serve basis. The decor, docents and delicious recipes remind us of a simpler time.

Hickory Motor Speedway is known as the Birthplace of NASCAR stars and The World's Most Famous Short Track. This IS where it all began after all. Think way back to Burt Reynolds and Sally Field in Smokey and the Bandit.

SALT Block, Science (hands-on science center, planetarium, aquarium), Art (Museum of Art, auditorium), Language (Library) Together. Originally built as a high school, the SALT block is a happening place year round pleasing any taste, young and not-so. The Hickory Museum of Art delights us with accomplished works of various venues. Currently showing is My Life as a Refugee, The Face and Voice of Latinos in Catawba Valley, The Story of Freedom, Watercolor Society of North Carolina, Faces Of Hickory, Carolina Folk Sculptors, Catawba Valley Camera Club Photo Competition, Treacherous Beauty: The Art of the Dagger, Born on Fire (exhibition on glass),  Murky Purposes, and Southern Contemporary Folk Art.

Hickory Aviation Museum was opened in May 2007 at the Hickory Airport and is run by The Sabre Society which is best known for exciting local air shows. On loan currently are the Grumman F-14D Tomcat, the McDonnell Douglas F-4B Phantom II, the North American FJ-3M Fury (F-1C), the LTV A-7A Corsair II, the A4-L Skyhawk, the Republic Fairchild F-105B, the Lockheed T-33A Shooting Star, the De Haviland Vampire, and the Hispano HA-200 Saeta (ME-200)

Hickory Crawdads entertain us in the fresh air of LP Frans stadium from April to September. Be sure to give a wave to Conrad when you go. Fireworks color the evening skies every week. Good, clean fun.

Both Hickory and Conover offer space to their Farmers Markets downtown from the spring to fall. Vendors sell fruits, vegetables, orchids, herbs, meats, breads, cheese, soaps, birdhouses, and everything else under the sun and even in the rain.

And, you can't help notice the sinkhole that sits unfixed on Hwy 70 after gobbling up a brand new Corvette and eventually the Buffalo's Southwest Cafe that sat on its edge of doom. News of the sinkhole flashed across The Weather Channel's screen bringing Hickory to the forefront for a few short scary moments.

As you can see, the Catawba Valley offers a variety of attractions. Check back soon as the list continues to grow......
