Time to take the Polar Plunge in Lake Hickory!

For everyone looking forward to jumping into a frigid lake to benefit Special Olympic athletes in North Carolina, your wait is almost over.

The sixth annual Polar Plunge is right around the corner.

The event will feature dozens of people leaping into the frigid waters of Lake Hickory at the Whittenburg Wildlife Access on Feb. 11 at 1 p.m.

Registration starts at 11 a.m. and plungers are required to donate a minimum of $50 to Special Olympics.

The Hickory Police Department’s goal is to raise $10,000 for Special Olympics North Carolina.

In 2009, the Hickory Polar Plunge raised $4,600 for Special Olympics. In 2010, the Polar Plunge raised $6,000. Last year, 80 people jumped in the chilly lake and raised $11,000.

Hickory police Sgt. Randy Isenhour is organizing the event.

Last year, he raised about $900 for Special Olympics with sponsorships.

His secret is simple: he uses Firstgiving.com/sonc. He signed on, chose the Hickory Polar Plunge event, made his own donation page then sent it out to everyone on his email address list. Then he sat back and watched the donations roll in.

“A lot of people just pay the minimum $50 donation and jump in the water – this way you can raise a lot more money – and this is all about raising as much money as possible for Special Olympics,” Isenhour said.

All plungers will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Doughnut, hot chocolate and coffee will be available during the event. Rescue personnel will be on site and divers will be in the water during the plunge.

Hickory Hops!

One of the South's most popular beer festivals is this weekend in downtown Hickory! The 9th Annual Hickory Hops is hosted by Olde Hickory Brewery and put together by the Hickory Downtown Development Association on Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm.

Interesting food, for one. If you order a cheeseburger "all-the-way" in Hickory, you will get a big surprise: cole slaw and chili on top of the usual lettuce, tomato, pickle, and mayo/mustard. I've heard it's delicious but still haven't tried it in the dozen+ years living here.

Or how about Livermush aka poor man's pate'? Another jewel only found but in these parts. A breakfast food served with eggs or between two slices of toast. Everyone has their own way of preparing it. Personally, if it had a different name, I'd eat more of it. Livermush is quite tasty without knowledge of the ingredients. Shelby, NC has a Livermush festival each year to celebrate its roots in the Appalachians.

Santa wants world peace for Christmas!

Advent has begun and Christmas is right around the corner.....are you prepared? In trying to get myself into the yuletide spirit, my friend, Frankie and I sat on Santa's lap while Mrs. Santa snapped the photo.

Downtown Hickory was alive with carolers last night. Clayter-Kaye Theater Works serenaded the many young (and old) waiting to sit on Santa's lap to whisper gift ideas for his naughty & nice list. After the young finished the Christmas carols, a local duet, Ashera, sang in the brisk weather in front of the Hickory Wine Shoppe while Wilson Farms filled their tractors with visitors supplied with sheet music and drove them around filling the streets with sweet noels. A horse drawn carriage swept through the city delighting the passerby. Union Square was illuminated with spirit and light.

Carolina Theater hosted the Footcandle Film Society's monthly movie night featuring "You'll Meet a Tall Dark Stranger" by Woodie Allen for the low price of $5. Check out the group's website for information on next month's showing.

If you haven't gotten your Christmas tree yet, get over to St Aloysius Catholic Church where the youth are selling top-notch Fraser firs freshly cut from the neighboring mountains. They are selling trees right on Hwy 127 which splits the city, so it will be hard to miss them or their great prices!

We're back online in WNC! Our hiatus through the real estate season has ended and I have time to write once again about our fair city and what is going on in it. Thanks for waiting!

The weather in Hickory, NC is just gorgeous after we've become accustomed to the cooler temps, shorter days and the DST change. 60s during the day and 40s at night, low humidity and bright sunny skies, Perfect! I love western North Carolina just for this.

Lo and behold, the holiday season is quickly approaching. Downtown Hickory invites everyone to the Christmas tree lighting Friday, November 19th on Union Square. Our mayor, the ever-popular, Rudy Wright, will hit the switch for the lights on the tree. Music from Rick Cline and Nathan Hefner will fill the crisp air while Mr. and Mrs. Claus meet and greet one and all starting at 6:30 pm next Friday evening. You don't want to miss this!

Taste Full Beans plans their 10 year anniversary on Thursday, November 18th starting at 6 pm with wine, food, coffee and entertainment at 7 from the Lost Jewels of Ghawazee, a local belly dancing troupe. Edgar and DW have filled our cups with opulent coffees and teas, our plates with scrumptious foods while we've admired the works of local artists for a decade. Foothills Painters displays their works now for their Holiday Show and Sale through December 4th. Each month, Taste Full Beans, also, hosts Poetry Hickory on the 2nd Tuesday at 6:30 pm with Scott Owens as facilitator of native NC writers. There is usually an "open mike" session following the guest speaker. Come out and see what you're missing.

Farmer's Market Opens Today in Hickory, NC!

Hickory's farmer's market welcomes shoppers to browse the collection of fresh home grown vegetables, herbs, flowers, meats, as well as, homemade breads, soaps, birdhouses, furniture, clocks and fried pies two days a week from April thru November. Located on the south side of the RR tracks by the old depot, vendors from Catawba county and beyond set up pop-up tents to sell their goods to those of us who waited patiently all winter.

Commune with your neighbors or make new friends while browsing the scrumptious inventory. Potatoes, onions, squash, cabbage, lettuce, and peas were available today. One of the farmers, Daphine and Sons, from Lincolnton sold 50 lbs of asparagus before 10 am. I was surprised to see 3 yr old bare root plants for sale at her booth and purchased 8 for my garden!

The coming months will showcase gorgeous tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, corn, beans, okra, zucchini, broccoli...everything under the sun. Local ranchers serve up fresh meats and cheeses. Greenhouse owners sell every imaginable specimen, and some you've never seen or heard of ever before.

Come out for a visit and shop organically in downtown Hickory on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. While you are at it, shop at the local stores on Union Square or have lunch at one of the tasty restaurants. See you there!

We love our Lake Hickory! With the weather warming, we have big plans on how we are going to use it.

Fishing: Largemouth bass, catfish, crappie are commonplace here. Stripers, 30 pounders, are caught on our lake! Seine for shad and bait your hook. Up in the back coves, fisherman quietly troll for prized catches. Duke Energy's Wittenburg Access, on the main channel just West of Hwy 127 bridge, has tournaments in the evenings a couple days a week. Stop and ask for dates/times.

Hard to believe! Hickory, NC was gifted with 7+ inches beginning on Friday morning. It took many by surprise with few snowstorms recorded in the area before Christmas since the "old" days. SUVs tumbled into the ditch with the trusting vehicles following suit. The stores of bread and milk depleted quickly from the grocery shelves. These are the staples of the foothill's residents for a snowy interlude. Snow Cream must be created and consumed for breakfast which is mostly likely followed by eggs and livermush, another local savory staple.

My first entry will help you get acquainted with me, my company Lake Hickory Realty, LLC and Hickory, NC.

My family moved to the foothills of NC in the fall of 1996 from Texas via Minneapolis (brrr). The Unifour, as Hickory was called, it lays in 4 counties:Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba, had just been put on the map with the Readers Digest's Best Place to Raise a Family award along with Lenoir, the county seat of Caldwell and Morganton, the county seat of Burke. Before the story broke, the local chambers had been mailing an average of 3 relocation packets a month to prospective newcomers. After the magazine hit the shelves, they were sending out over 300 every week. Baby Boomers had found Western NC and liked the possibilities of retirement on the lake and/or near the mountains. Investors came in droves. Developments popped up on all the area lakes and their developers flew buyers in from up and down the East Coast.
